If your child is still nursing or bottle-feeding, their final feeding should occur thirty minutes before bedtime (unless feeding your baby usually takes longer than ten to fifteen minutes, in which case start about forty minutes before bedtime). Naps are shorter than overnight sleep, so your routine can be too. Take advantage of the sleep associations your baby knows — a story or song — and incorporate them into his naptime routine.
If a child is happy, comfortable, and tired, problems falling asleep are likely to be behavioural (such as bedtime resistance) or environmental (such as noise). There is no right or wrong place for babies to sleep. Wherever all family members sleep the best is the right arrangement for you and your baby. Some babies sleep best in their own crib in their own room, some sleep better in their own cot in the parents’ bedroom, other babies sleep best snuggled right next to mum in the parents’ bed. Establish a nighttime and naptime sleep ritual that may include singing songs or reading stories. Stick with this routine, and put the baby down at around the same time each day. Swaddling baby (until he's around 8 weeks old) or putting him into a sleep sack before placing him in the crib may make him feel extra secure and, hopefully, encourage him to fall asleep in his bed. Since most babies can block out disturbing noise, you don’t have to create a noiseless sleeping environment, yet some babies startle and awaken easily with sudden noises. For these babies, oil the joints and springs of a squeaky crib, put out the dog before he barks and turn the ringer off on the phone. This is a great time to create a few bedtime habits. It signals to your baby that bedtime is coming, and it’s nearly sleep time. Sleep experts say it should last about half an hour – no more than 45 minutes – and take place calmly in the bedroom and bathroom. Newborns sleep a total of 14 to 17 hours across a 24 hour period, on an irregular schedule with periods of one to three hours spent awake. The sleep period may last a few minutes to several hours. The First Few Months Can Be A Bit Of A Blur
You should use a firm and flat mattress for baby that is protected by a waterproof cover. This will help keep the mattress clean and dry, as the cover can be wiped down. Make sure your baby’s mattress is in good condition and that it fits the Moses basket or cot properly. Newborns sleep about 16 hours a day, usually in 3- to 4-hour periods. Your baby needs to eat every few hours, which is why she doesn’t sleep for longer periods of time. Your baby may get cranky or overtired if she doesn’t get enough sleep. Unfortunately for many bleary-eyed new parents out there who’ve struggled with a sleepless baby, there’s no way to prevent sleep regression. It’s a normal part of baby and toddlerhood. A tiny baby gets tired just being alive, but older babies need a bit more stimulation and play during their wake times in order to be tired enough to sleep. There are several age-appropriate activities you and baby can do together as part of their bedtime routine. As your child grows, you’ll likely restructure the activities you do based on their age and development. Try music to sleep by, such as tape recordings of waterfalls or ocean sounds, or a medley of easy-listening lullabies on a continuous-play tape recorder. These sleep-inducing sounds remind baby of the sounds she was used to hearing in the womb. Your baby might be battling bedtime because she doesn’t love her crib (rocking in your embrace is so much nicer), or isn't comfortable being placed safely on her back. If that’s the case, try putting her down drowsy but awake in a snug swaddle with a pacifier, which can help her feel safer. Your heart may swell with love when you watch your baby sleeping. They look so sweet and innocent. Your heart may race, though, when you can’t get them to stay asleep all night or at times when you really want them to nap or sleep. You can ease your stress and better prepare to set your baby's sleep schedule by understanding which parts of their sleep routine are in your hands -- and which aren’t. Introduce Some Quiet Time Before Bedtime
Focus on figuring out how your newborn likes to sleep. As long as they are not able to flip over, swaddling is generally considered safe, although you should always check with your pediatrician to make sure they recommend it for your child. Don’t get complacent: Manage your expectations even if you’ve had a few good weeks of your baby sleeping for longer periods, don’t assume this will last, unfortunately, it often doesn’t and there will be periods of disruption from time to time. Baby will likely experience growth spurts at around 3 months, 6 months and 9 months (though the exact timing can vary).
